Attabad Lake is one of Pakistan's most photographed natural wonders β a strikingly turquoise glacial lake formed in 2010 when a massive landslide blocked the Hunza River, creating a 21-kilometre stretch of impossibly blue water surrounded by towering brown mountains. Located on the Karakoram Highway in Hunza Valley, it is a key highlight of every KKH road trip from Islamabad.
On 4 January 2010, a catastrophic landslide in the Attabad village in upper Hunza sent millions of tons of rock into the Hunza River, blocking its flow completely. Over the following months, water backed up behind the natural dam to create what is now Attabad Lake β 21 km long and up to 100 metres deep. While the landslide displaced thousands of residents and submerged entire villages, it inadvertently created one of Pakistan's most spectacular natural attractions.
Today, the KKH tunnel that bypasses the submerged section of the old highway has made Attabad fully accessible by road. Visitors can cross the lake by boat (a short but spectacular ride) or drive through the five tunnels that were carved through the mountain to restore the road connection to Gojal and China.
Attabad Lake sits approximately 600 km from Islamabad via the Karakoram Highway β roughly 1β2 hours beyond Karimabad (Hunza town). The journey from Islamabad typically takes 13β15 hours of driving, best broken into two days with an overnight stop in Besham or Chilas.
A 4x4 SUV is strongly recommended for the Islamabad to Attabad Lake journey. The Karakoram Highway has improved dramatically in recent years but sections through Kohistan and Chilas still have narrow lanes, sharp turns, and the occasional unpaved diversion after landslides. A Toyota Prado TXL or Land Cruiser V8 is our top recommendation.
April to October is ideal for Attabad Lake. April and May bring spring greenery along the KKH. June to August offers the most stable weather and warmest temperatures. October has crisp air and stunning autumn foliage in Hunza Valley. The lake remains accessible year-round, but winter road conditions on the KKH can be challenging.
Attabad Lake is best visited as part of a broader Hunza Valley itinerary β Karimabad, Baltit Fort, Rakaposhi Viewpoint, and Eagle's Nest are all nearby. A 3β4 day Hunza package covers all the highlights comfortably. WhatsApp us for a custom multi-day package price including driver accommodation.
