The route is accessible by ordinary sedan — no 4x4 required, though a higher-ground-clearance vehicle is more comfortable on the narrower sections.
Public transport does not serve Pir Sohawa directly — a hired car with driver is the practical option. The driver waits at the summit while you explore, hike, or dine.
The most famous viewpoint in the Margalla Hills — a hilltop garden maintained by the Capital Development Authority where a wide terrace offers a sweeping panorama of Islamabad's green grid below. Dawn and dusk are the most spectacular times. Street food stalls and a café operate on the terrace.
Trail 3 is the most popular hiking route in the Margalla Hills — a 6.5 km loop that climbs through dense forest to ridge viewpoints before looping back down. The trail is well-marked and maintained but has significant elevation gain. Wildlife encountered includes barking deer, porcupines, various monkeys, and a wide variety of bird species.
Trail 5 is more accessible than Trail 3 — shorter, less steep, and suitable for families with children and less experienced hikers. The trail passes through beautiful forest and offers good birdwatching opportunities without the demanding gradient of the longer trails.
Islamabad's most iconic dining destination sits on a hillside in the Margalla Hills with panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows over the city. The menu covers Pakistani, BBQ, and continental cuisine. Sunset seating is the most coveted — book a window table at least a day ahead for weekend evenings. The drive up through the forest is beautiful in itself.
The Margalla Hills National Park is home to an impressive range of wildlife — Himalayan leopards (rarely seen), barking deer, Indian porcupine, grey langur monkeys, and over 250 bird species including eagles, bee-eaters, kingfishers, and seasonal migratory birds. The park covers 17,386 hectares and is an important conservation area.
