Departure 7:00am from Islamabad. Join the Karakoram Highway at Hasan Abdal and follow the Indus River through stunning gorge scenery. Drive through Attock, Tarbela Lake, and Thakot Bridge where the KKH officially begins.
Lunch stop at Besham β a market town with good roadside restaurants. Continue through the dramatic Indus Kohistan section β deeply carved gorges, hanging villages, and the river thundering below. Overnight in Besham (7β8 hours driving).
Early departure from Besham. The road becomes increasingly dramatic as it climbs through the Babusar region. Nanga Parbat first appears on the left β at 8,126m, it dominates the landscape with extraordinary presence.
Lunch in Chilas. Continue through the Gilgit region β the landscape changes from bare rock gorge to wider mountain valley. Arrive Gilgit city in the afternoon β the capital of Gilgit-Baltistan. Overnight in Gilgit (7β8 hours driving from Besham).
Short morning drive from Gilgit to Karimabad (2β2.5 hours). Stop at Rakaposhi Viewpoint β one of Pakistan's most photographed mountain panoramas, where the 7,788m peak fills the entire southern horizon.
Arrive Karimabad β the main town of Hunza Valley. Check in to your hotel. Afternoon: explore Baltit Fort, the ancient royal residence of the Mirs of Hunza, dating back 700 years. Walk through the old bazaar. Evening: attempt Eagle's Nest for sunset views over the valley β one of the great viewpoints in all of Asia.
Full day exploring Hunza's headline attractions. Morning drive to Attabad Lake β 30km beyond Karimabad, this impossibly turquoise lake formed by the 2010 landslide is one of Pakistan's most stunning natural sights. Boat ride on the lake.
Return via Altit Fort β older than Baltit Fort and dramatically perched on a cliff above the Hunza River. Afternoon: Duikar Village above Karimabad for photography β the classic elevated view of the Hunza Valley with Lady Finger, Ultar Sar, and Rakaposhi visible simultaneously.
Optional Day 5: Early start for Khunjerab Pass at 4,693m β the world's highest paved international border crossing with China. The drive from Karimabad takes approximately 2.5 hours each way through spectacular high-altitude landscapes including Passu, Gulmit, and Sost.
Wildlife in Khunjerab National Park includes Marco Polo sheep, ibex, and occasionally snow leopards. The Pakistan border post and friendship monument mark the China border. Return to Karimabad by evening. Note: Khunjerab is open MayβOctober only.
Early departure from Hunza (6:00β7:00am recommended). The return KKH journey covers 540km and takes 12β14 hours with stops. Take in all the landscapes you passed on the way up with fresh eyes and in different light.
Option to overnight in Chilas or Besham if you prefer a relaxed 2-day return. Direct return arrives in Islamabad by 8:00β10:00pm. Your driver drops you at your door.
