Neelum Valley in Azad Jammu and Kashmir is one of Pakistan's most spectacular — and most underrated — river valleys. A 240-kilometre stretch of emerald-green water, dense pine forests, traditional Kashmiri wooden villages, and snow-capped peaks running parallel to the Line of Control, Neelum Valley is accessible from Islamabad in approximately 5 hours and offers a dramatically different landscape to the better-known northern areas.
Unlike the harsh, arid mountain landscapes of the KKH, Neelum Valley is lush and green — the Neelum River runs turquoise and swift alongside the road for the entire length of the valley, with cascading waterfalls, ancient wooden mosques, and high alpine meadows visible in every direction. The valley is also notably less crowded than Hunza or Naran during peak season, offering a more authentic and peaceful experience.
Neelum Valley is reached via Muzaffarabad — the capital of Azad Kashmir — which is approximately 155 km from Islamabad (3 hours drive). From Muzaffarabad, the Neelum Valley road runs northeast for 240 km alongside the river to Sharda at the upper end of the accessible portion.
Ratti Gali is one of Pakistan's most beautiful alpine lakes — a crystal-clear glacial lake at 3,600 metres surrounded by snow-capped peaks and accessible by jeep from Sharda plus a 2–3 hour trek. The lake's setting is utterly breathtaking and relatively few visitors reach it, making it one of Pakistan's great undiscovered gems. Only accessible July to September when snow clears the approach.
The Neelum River flows the entire length of the valley alongside the road, changing colour from deep green to turquoise depending on the season and depth. River-side camping, fishing for mahseer (a prized local fish), and simply sitting by the water watching it rush past are among the most popular activities in the valley.
Keran is a picturesque town at the confluence of the Neelum River and the Line of Control — you can literally see the Indian-administered Neelum (Kishanganga) Valley on the other side of the river. Traditional Kashmiri wooden architecture, local food, and a peaceful atmosphere make Keran a perfect base for exploring the middle portion of the valley.
Sharda is famous for the ruins of the ancient Sharada Peeth — a revered Hindu temple and centre of learning that dates back over 2,000 years. The ruins sit on a hillside overlooking the river, and the town itself is the main hub for trekking expeditions deeper into the valley including to Ratti Gali Lake.
An SUV is recommended for the Neelum Valley road — the route from Muzaffarabad beyond Keran involves narrow mountain roads where higher ground clearance is valuable. For the jeep track to Ratti Gali, a local jeep from Sharda is the standard transport (arranged locally).
